Washington, D.C. – Today, the Veterans Energy Pipeline (the “Pipeline”), a new resource to help veterans identify private sector jobs that utilize skills that were acquired while serving our country, was unveiled at an event at the U.S. Capitol.  The event was hosted by U.S. Senator and member of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, Joe Manchin (D-WV), and API President and CEO Jack Gerard.

“The Veterans Energy Pipeline website, underwritten by the American Petroleum Institute (API), is an easy-to-use tool that takes veterans through the process of identifying a job that matches the skill-set they acquired while in uniform,” said Rear Admiral Don Loren, USN (ret.) and the National Liaison for Vets4Energy. “It’s an intuitive, step-by-step guide that translates all types of military jobs into their more commonly-known civilian equivalents.”

The oil and natural gas industry supports more than nine million American men and women in fields ranging from accountants and geologists to rig hands. It is estimated that half of the industry’s skilled workforce will retire in the next five to ten years.  Replacing this pool of talent, particularly in light of America’s recent domestic energy boom, has become a priority for the industry.

“Our goal is to build on the successes of America’s energy revolution and help those serving our country, as well as veterans, transition into well-paying careers in the oil and gas industry,” said API President and CEO Jack Gerard. “This unique forum will provide important information about the industry, the outlook for job opportunities and useful job-hunting tools and resources.”

The Pipeline also is designed for prospective employers as well. Using the site, a company looking for veteran talent can enter their own job descriptions and determine which military occupations best fit their needs.

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee and Co-Chair of the Congressional Veterans Jobs Caucus, recognizes that the unemployment rate for veterans has decreased, but notes that more still needs to be done, "We still have far too many veterans who remain unemployed. With more than a million service members who will be transitioning back to civilian life, we need the tools, resources and corporate commitments to ensure that our veterans can come home to jobs that are meaningful and provide the quality of life that they deserve.”

In the coming weeks and months, Vets4Energy will be reaching out to veterans to educate them about the Veterans Energy Pipeline website. Our outreach will include national and state Veterans Service Organizations as well as state government veterans departments and state jobs programs.
